305. John Taylor & Son / T. R. & H. Butterworth, Rochdale (T). Mar., Sep., Dec. 1802, Jan., Mar., Oct. 1803, Apr. 1804. 14 items. 20 horse power double-acting crank engine, with 23¾ inch cylinder, 5 foot stroke, parallel motion, cast iron connecting rod. New cylinder added Jul. 1806.
Coloured original and reverse general view of the engine, longitudinal section of the boiler and plan of the engine and boilers dated Sep. 1802; coloured original general view of the engine, longitudinal section of the boiler and plan of the engine and boilers dated Jan. 1803, with altered arrangement of nozzles, air pump and condenser; reverse plan and sections of the engine and boiler houses and framing, and drawings of cistern; working gear - coloured original front and side views; parallel motion - 2 coloured original drawing, one originally made for Taylor and a later one made for Butterworths. All the drawings bear letter codes. Also sketch plan and section of the engine house, by William Creighton (not dated); sketch plan and section of the engine house showing pipes and cistern, by John Southern dated 24 Mar. 1803; press copy sketches of top of connecting rod [?], marked "Sent to Mr. Lawson 14 Apr. 1804"; reverse drawing of condenser vessel marked "John Holme & Co. 11 Oct. 1803" [should be 1804?].

For John Taylor & Son. Cotton mill, Rochdale. This engine was ordered by Taylor & Son, but almost immediately leased to T. R. & H. Butterworth, and all the drawings are marked "Messrs. Butterworth". The concern became John Holme & Co. circa 1803-1804. |
