Description20 horse power double-acting sun & planet engine, with 24 inch cylinder, 5 foot stroke, parallel motion.

Includes reverse general view of the engine, plans and sections of the engine, engine and boiler houses and mill, showing millwork, grindstones, floors, chimney, foundation work, well, external view of the mill house; also "direct copies" (i.e. not reverse) of three of the sections; parallel motion; working gear - reverse coloured plans and front and side views marked "Cole Morgan Lewin & Co."; nozzles marked "17 20", gudgeon (on the same sheet are gudgeons for John Cartwright 1789 and drawing ANL of 11 Feb. 1792 marked "36,40"), steam and eduction pipes marked "17 20 No. 2", shafts, wheels, spindles and gear, condenser vessels, socket part of steam pipe; sheet of notes and calculations by John Southern, including "Mr. Rennie's opinion."

6 drawings are ones that were newly prepared for Cole Morgan Lewin & Co. on 25 Oct. 1788. These are reverse general view of the engine, plans and sections of the engine and boilers, including one plan showing connection to the millwork and part of the premises; rough sketch for front view of engine. All are reverse drawings.

For James Haig & Co. Distillery, Canonmills, Edinburgh. Haig & Co. ordered the engine, but cancelled it in Apr. 1787, by which time most of the parts had been made. The engine was offered to Major John Cartwright in Aug. 1788. However it was eventually bought by Cole Morgan Lewin & Co. for a wool spinning mill in London. John Rennie sold the engine to them in Oct. 1788. According to the Catalogue of Old Engines the firm later became Boulton Morgan & Co. (bankrupts), then James Douglas, then Mr. Bell, then in 1803 F. Paisley.
