Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 714. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 94.
For Thomas Orrell. Textile mill, Stalybridge. The engine was actually made in 1814, but not appropriated to Orrell until 1818. Engine Order Book No. 8 refers to this engine as "Thomas Orrell, Stayleybridge (No. 2)", so the engine was probably for the same mill as the sun and planet engine ordered by John Orrell in 1797 [see Portfolio 5/146]. By 1836 this engine was owned by Benjamin Kirk. See Portfolio 5/513 for the second 36 horse engine installed by Kirk.
