Description10 horse power double-acting sun & planet engine, with 17½ inch cylinder, 4 foot stroke, parallel motion. Second boiler added 1793, power increased to 12 horses 1798.

Includes coloured original and reverse general view of the engine, coloured original and reverse plans and sections of the engine and boiler; framing and cistern - reverse drawings; reverse plans and sections of the engine house; parallel motion - reverse drawing marked "Bayly"; working gear - coloured original and reverse front and side views marked "From Bayly's, Dobbs' nozzles"; socket marked "from Order Book p. 98". All the drawings bear letter codes.
One item dates from the later alterations - reverse plan and section of the second boiler, dated 21 Sep. 1793, coded BQL.

For John Kendrew, Jonathan Backhouse and James Backhouse Jr. Linen manufacturing and spinning mill, Darlington. The firm writes as John Kendrew & Co. from 1791, then J. & J. Backhouse from Oct. 1797.
