Engine originally erected by Watt at Kinneil. Re-erected at Soho Manufactory in 1774, the first steam engine to be erected there. The engine was used to pump back water to power the water wheel. From 1777 the engine was referred to as the "Soho Old Engine" or the "Little Engine" to distinguish it from the second engine erected at the Manufactory. After the second engine replaced it for pumping, this engine was applied to a forge hammer, and circa Apr. 1781, it was proposed that it should be applied to rolling metal for the copy press company.
