For Soho Manufactory. For pumping back water to power the water wheel. The engine was used for trials of expansive working and was sometimes referred to as the "Expansive Engine", but was nicknamed "Beelzebub" on account of its violent action. The engine later became known as "Old Bess", and still exists in greatly altered form in The Science Museum, London.
