For Peter Atherton of Liverpool and partners. Cotton mill, Salford. This engine was ordered by Atherton, but the partnership became known as The Salford Twist Co. The engine agreement was signed on 2 May 1791 by Atherton, who was described as an "engine maker" and Charles Wood and John and George Philips, all of Manchester. However on 1 Sep. 1791 Atherton told Boulton & Watt that the Salford firm was "not yet fixed". Boulton & Watt's long-term friend George Lee may have joined in 1794, as several of the reverse drawings are marked "Copy for Mr. Lee 20 Aug. 1794". The firm later became Philips Wood & Lee and later Philips & Lee. The second Salford Twist Co. 30 horse power engine was connected to this engine, and in 1803 the two engines were altered and connected to a common 48 inch cylinder to form the "Alteration Engine", which the firm appear to have called "Pluto".
