Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 147.

For James Dicker Budd, William Goadsby and company. Union cotton [?] mill, Liverpool. This engine was virtually identical to that ordered by Peter Atherton for the Salford Twist Co. (see Portfolio 5/63 above), and Atherton often acted as a go-between while the details of the engine were being planned. By Dec. 1795 Union Mill was being operated by John and Robert Kirkman, who may have been part of the original firm. By Oct. 1796 the Kirkmans owed money both to Boulton & Watt and Peter Atherton. Atherton told Boulton & Watt that of the other members of the firm, Budd had been declared bankrupt, Goadsby was in America and probably poor, and a Mr. Allingham was unable to pay. This engine was omitted from the Catalogue of Old Engines.
