For Robert Denison of Nottingham and Samuel Hamer Oates of Leeds. Cotton mill, Nottingham. By 1801 the firm had become Oates Stephens & Co [alternatively "Oats Stephenson & Co.'s" - see MS 3147/3/276/44]. The change possibly took place in 1794, when Denison told Boulton & Watt that the "deluded populace" had burnt the mill down and that he had sent his son to America with a possible view to the whole family following. According to the Catalogue of Old Engines the engine burnt down in Dec. 1802. [cf. MS 3147/3/276/44]
