Six horse power bell crank engine, with 16 inch cylinder, 2 foot stroke. Engine formerly belonged to Boulton Watt & Co [see MS 3147/5/1444].

Front view of the foundations and boiler, side view of the engine, longitudinal section of the boiler, plan of the engine and boiler - direct copy drawing (4 drawings on 1 sheet). The sheet bears a letter code.

Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 689.

For W. & E. Frankin, Trowbridge, Wiltshire. This engine was originally erected at Soho Manufactory in 1802, as part of the expansion of the engine shops. In Aug. 1815 the engine was taken down and replaced by a 14 horse engine. The engine was repaired, various new parts were made, and it was offered for sale, having been given the code ZCT and entered in Engine Order Book No. 8. The sale to W. & E. Franklin was arranged by George Haden.

The original of this drawing was prepared for W. & E. Franklin in Sep. 1815. This direct copy was originally placed in Drawing Office Book No. 689, which contained drawings of 6 and 8 horse independent beam engines which were being sold at the same time. At some point - probably when Henry Hazleton was splitting up such portfolios in the 1890s - the drawing found its way into the boxes of "Miscellaneous Drawings". Under Hazleton's arrangement it logically belongs with the drawings of other bell crank engines. Therefore it has been placed here and numbered Portfolio 5/797, re-using a discontinued Hazleton number which was originally allocated to Bruce & Moens' engine which did not have any separate drawings [see Portfolio 5/796 above].
