For Anthony, George and Henry Salvin of Castle Eden. Cotton mill, Durham. Messrs. Salvin originally had premises in Manchester, for which they ordered a 30 horse engine with a 28½ inch cylinder in Dec. 1791, and Book 168 was opened accordingly, with John Southern noting the details in his List of Books. However letters in the Drawing Office Letter Book Oct. 1791-Oct. 1794 and the Business Letter Book Sep. 1793-Sep. 1795 make it clear that the 30 horse engine earmarked for Salvins was sold to Markland Cookson & Fawcett of Leeds in 1792 [see Portfolio 5/91]. This was presumably occasioned by Salvins' move to Durham. They then ordered a 16 horse engine in Jan. 1793, and it is drawings for this second engine which appear in this portfolio. The later Drawing Office Index notes that drawings for both the 30 and the 16 horse engine were in Book 168. However Henry Hazleton omitted the 16 horse from the Catalogue of Old Engines but noted the 30 horse (p. 46). |
