For Thomas Lowe. Corn mill [?], Nottingham. This engine was of an usual arrangement which Boulton Watt & Co. referred to as "wiggle waggle". The inner end of the beam was connected directly to the piston rod, and the outer end was mounted on the engine framing. The connecting rod was connected to the beam between the beam's centre and inner end, and worked the crank shaft which was mounted in the centre of the base frame. Boulton Watt & Co. only made four engines employing this arrangement: this one; one for Bally Ellen & Steart in 1808 [see Portfolio 5/846]; and two for Philips & Lee in 1807 and 1810 [see Portfolio 5/844a & b]. The geographical section of the List of Engines made at Soho says that the engine was used for turning lathes etc., and erroneously describes it as an 8 horse engine. |
