931. 10 and 8 Horse Sugar Plantation Engines, West Indies (DV, EM, EO, EP, EQ, ER, EY, FY, EZ). Sep. 1816, Jan., Jul.-Sep. 1817, Oct. 1820, May, Jul. 1823. 2 items. Seven 10 horse power independent crank engines, with 19¾ inch cylinders, 2½ foot strokes, parallel motions, cast iron beams, cast iron connecting rods. EY, EZ: Two 8 horse power independent crank engines, with 17? inch cylinders, 2½ foot strokes, parallel motions, cast iron beams, cast iron connecting rods.

These drawings were used for nine separate engines. Henry Hazleton assigned a portfolio number to each engine despite the fact that there were no individual drawings for the engines. The original drawings for this engine were made in Sep. 1816. Richard Lee, Jamaica (EM) [Hazleton's Portfolio 932]. Sugar plantation engine ordered by Richard Lee of 46 Lime St., London. The original drawings for this engine were made in Jan. 1817. Underwood Hall & Co., Demerara (EO) [Hazleton's Portfolio 933]. For the Richmond Hill Estate, Demerara. Sugar plantation engine ordered by Underwood Hall & Co. of 2 Copthall Chambers, Throgmorton St., London. The original drawings for this engine were made in Jul. 1817. In 1840 W. S. Hamilton & Co. had the power of this engine increased to 13 horses. H. Braaksma, Berbice (EP) [Hazleton's Portfolio 934]. For Mr. van de Brock, Friends Estate, Berbice. Sugar plantation engine ordered by H. Braaksma of 7 Ball Alley, Lombard St., London. The original drawings for this engine were made in Jul. 1817. By 1830 the engine had passed to Winter & Co. Deffell & Co., Jamaica (EQ) [Hazleton's Portfolio 935]. For the Whim Estate, Jamaica. Sugar plantation engine ordered by Deffell & Co. of Billiter Square, London. The original drawings for this engine were made in Aug. 1817. The estate later became the St. Dorothy's Estate. Nathaniel Winter & Co., Demerara (ER) [Hazleton's Portfolio 936]. For Mr. Barnwell, Demerara. Sugar plantation engine ordered by Nathaniel Winter & Co. of 3 Copthall St., London. The original drawings for this engine were made in Sep. 1817. Thomas Daniel & Sons, Demerara (EY) [Hazleton's Portfolio 924]. Sugar plantation engine ordered by Thomas Daniel & Sons of Bristol. This was an 8 horse engine. The original drawings for this engine were made in Oct. 1820. Note that Henry Hazleton confused this engine with engine EB, an 8 horse engine ordered by Daniel & Sons in 1816. Thomas Daniel & Sons (FY). Sugar plantation [?] engine ordered by Thomas Daniel & Sons of Bristol. The engine was made in 1819, but not sold to Daniel & Sons until 1823. The original drawings were made in May 1823. Henry Hazleton did not allocate a portfolio number to this engine, but it is listed on p. 228 of the Catalogue of Old Engines. Thomas & William King, Demerara (EZ). Sugar plantation engine ordered by Thomas & William King of London. This 8 horse engine was made in 1817, but not sold to the Kings until 1823. The original drawings were made in Jul. 1823. Henry Hazleton did not allocate a portfolio number to this engine, but it is listed on p. 228 of the Catalogue of Old Engines.
