| Description | The ship 'Thetis' was commissioned by John Watt and partners, who sent William Craig and John Dennistoun to Philadelphia to build a ship for them. This was launched as the 'Thetis', with John Dennistoun as master, and made her first voyage to Madeira, then to Antigua , where it took on a cargo of sugar etc. The ship sailed about the end of August, 1733, but did not return home and was believed lost at sea. The papers include: a Copy of Commission: John Craig & Co. to Messrs. John Deneston and William Craig, 1732, and copies of letters from William Craig and John Dennistoun to John Craig & Co., 1732 - 1734; the insurance of the 'Thetis' and cargo by Neil Buchanan of London, 1733; an account of the ship 'Thetis' and its cargo, 1734 - 1735; a copy of a letter from Walter and Robert [....] of Madeira to William Craig concerning the sale of wines; copies of letters to Neil Buchanan in London concerning the loss of the 'Thetis' and the settlement of the claim on the insurance, 1734 - 1735; four letters from Neil Buchanan concerning the insurance of the ship and cargo, 1734 - 1735; an undated oath by John Watt, John Craig and Allan Dreghorn, merchants in Glasgow about the commissioning of the 'Thetis', and the belief that the vessel had been lost, and a discharge of accounts and claims on the other partners of the 'Thetis', 1735. |
