Description
The bundle includes: 'A Father's Advice, 1757: Harbors [sic] John Watt was in'; an account of the life of John Watt and testimonial to his character by Neil Jameson of Norfolk, Virginia, 1763; a copy of James Fife's letter giving an account of the wreck and John Watt's death, 1763; an account of John Watt's life by James Watt of Greenock; a composition 'on a sea loss'; and various calculations headed 'Staking papers 1771'.

A single receipt from 1744 was discovered at Doldowlod in 2002 and donated to the City Archives. It is listed in the ‘Later additions to the papers of James Watt and Family’ part of the MS 3219 catalogue.
The Watt and Muirhead papers were microfilmed by Adam Matthew Publications as part of Industrial Revolution: A Documentary History. ‘Muirhead I’ was published in Series One: part 2 in 1993; ‘Muirhead II-IV’ in Series One: parts 6 and 8, in 1997; and the ‘James Watt Papers’ in Series Three, in 1999. All the microfilms are available in Birmingham City Archives.

John Watt jr. was drowned in the Bahamas in 1763, where he had sailed to gain greater experience in the shipping business. These papers have dockets by James Watt of Greenock and additions by James Watt jr.
