The letters are numbered in red ink. The letters were tied in various small packets within the larger bundle, viz: (old nos.)
1 to 16 Letters from James Weston;
17 to 42 Letters about the new docks at Sheerness;
43 to 46; Letters from Robert Hamilton
47 to 67; Letters re Birmingham Canal Company
68 to 75; Letters from Thomas Lawrence and James Lawson re portraits of James Watt.
76 to 96; Miscellaneous letters, 1813.
97 to 133. Miscellaneous letters, 1812.
The letters in this bundle had suffered from water damage at some time and many are in a fragile condition.
The arrangement of the letters within each packet appeared to be mostly chronological.
The letters have a docket byJames Watt, but the numbering is probably a later addition.
The letters have been rearranged into one alphabetical sequence. The letters concerning the Birmingham Canal Company business have been listed under ‘Birmingham’ and the Sheerness material has been listed under ‘Sheerness’.
There were 3 unnumbered letters as enclosures [with letters 25 (2) and 27(new nos.)] and there were 2 unnumbered enclosures [with letters 57 and 93 (new nos.)].
