The dates actually covered are 1813 to 1815. The letters are numbered in red ink. The letters were tied in various small packets within the larger bundle, viz: (old nos.) 1 to 25 Letters from various; Jun. 1813 to Dec. 1814. 26 to 51 Letters from various; Jan. 1815 to Dec. 1815 52 to 56; Letters about Mr Whately’s affairs; Aug. 1814 - Aug. 1815. 57 to 64; Letters from E.M. Noble and 1 from E.Simpson re rent charge upon Heathfield; Dec. 1814 - Apr. 1815. 65 to 69; Letters from Mr Tuffen; Jan.1815- Sep. 1815. 70 to 79; Letters from C.Turner, and 1 from Thomas Lawrence about the engraving of James Watt’s portrait; Aug. 1813 - Sep. 1815. 80 to 83; Letters from Vale & Co. and 1 from R. Chippendale, about a watch; Feb.1815- May 1815. 84 to 101; Letters re Birmingham Canal business; Oct. 1811 - Dec. 1815. 102 to 123; Letters from J. Weston and 1 from J. Teesdale; Mar 1813 - Nov. 1815. 124 to 129; Letters from Dr Brewster and 1 from Mrs Murray; Feb. 1815 - Dec. 1815. The letters have a docket written by James Watt, but the numbering is probably later. There was one letter with no number, from Berthollet [now 10]; and 4 enclosed letters not numbered [ now in 22, 25 and 40] and 3 other enclosures [now in 45, 65 and 66]. The letters have been rearranged into one alphabetical sequence, except the letters about Birmingham Canal Company business, which have been listed under ‘Birmingham’.
