| Description | Bundle of seventy-nine letters to James Watt. There is a threaded bundle label with ‘ Miscellaneous Letters 1802,’ written in black ink. To this, ‘& 1803’ and ‘No 1 to 79 ’ have been added in red ink. The letters were numbered in red ink. They were arranged in neither chronological order nor alphabetical order. Old nos 1 to 10 appear to be concerning James Watt’s visit to Paris and Germany. New no. 45 [old no. 64] is a letter addressed to Dr William Withering and the date 1798 is on the docket; it is not apparent why it appears in this bundle. The bundle has been re-arranged into alphabetical order by correspondent and chronological order within an individual’s correspondence. There is a conspectus of old and new numbers at the end of the list. The correspondent’s name and the date has been written on the letter by James Watt. A few have a summary on the docket. Any summary provided by the cataloguer is in square brackets.
The original paper catalogue contains a numbering error for this series: the finding number MS 3219/4/44/30 appears twice. This has been corrected in CALM as MS 3219/4/44/30 and 3219/4/44/31. Therefore every entry after 3219/4/44/31 in CALM is one number higher than it appears on the paper catalogue. |
