| Description | Bundle of five letters to James Watt. There is no bundle wrapper. The packet is described on the 1876 list as ‘containing letters from Alexander Cumming, Claget, Darwin and Cooper, 1761 to 1769, No'd 1 to 4.’ ‘1761 to 1768 No. 1 to 4’ has been written, in red ink,on the outside of letter 1. Nos. 1 and 3 had been removed for display in the Lunar Society exhibition of 1966, but not replaced, and in 1995 were given the reference C 1/36 and C 1/ 38. Since the bundle is so small, the order of the letters has not been altered, so the numbers remain unchanged, except for letter 5 (Cooper), which had had no number. The correspondents name and the date has been written on the letter by James Watt .On some of the letters he added a very short summary, which is given in italics. Any summary in square brackets has been given by the cataloguer. One of these letters (new no. 4) has been partially transcribed for the ‘Extracts from Correspondence’ in James P. Muirhead’s three volume work The Mechanical Inventions of James Watt, (London, 1854). The number of the published letter is given below at the end of the docket, as, for example, (Muirhead no.6). |
