There is no bundle wrapper. On the outside fold of the uppermost letter has been written in red ink.: ‘ Miscellaneous Letters. 1770 to 1773. No. 1 to 39.’
There are forty letters: thirty nine were numbered in red ink, one was not numbered. The letters had been numbered in roughly chronological order.
They have now been arranged in chronological order and a conspectus of old and new numbers is given at the end of the list.
The letters have a docket by James Watt with the name of the correspondent and the date. Most letters have been given a summary by James Watt jr.
