DescriptionBundle of nine letters and papers between James Watt, and his niece (though he refers to her as ‘cousin’), Jean Cochrane.
There is a bundle label, written in red ink, as follows:

' Correspondence between Miss Cochrane and J. Watt Junr. 1776 - 1786. No. 1 to 9.'
The letters are numbered in red ink, in no apparent order.
The letters have now been arranged in chronological order, where possible, and a conspectus of old and new numbers is given at the end of the list.
The letters have a docket with the name of the correspondent and the date. In several cases the docket reads James Watt jr., but this refers to the person we know as James Watt.
There were no summaries.
Any summary in square brackets has been given by the cataloguer.
Jean Cochrane cared for James Watt of Greenock in his final years and looked after James Watt’s property in Greenock. When James Watt first went to Birmingham, before his marriage to Ann MacGregor, Jean Cochrane also cared for James Watt’s children, Margaret and James.
