| Description | Bundle of ten letters to James Watt, eight from Charles Clagget, one from William Cunningham, one press copy letter. 1788 — 1789. There is a bundle label, written in red ink, as follows: ‘ Letters from Mr Cunningham and Mr Clagget to Mr Watt. 1788 - 1789. No. 1 to 9.’ The letters are numbered in red ink, except for the copy press letter, which is not numbered. The letter numbered 2 (old no.) has ‘1788 to 1790’ written on it in pencil, with a pencil tick. The letters were arranged in approximately chronological order with the most recentt letter first. They have now been placed in chronological order beginning with the earliest letter, and renumbered. There is a conspectus of old and new numbers at the end of the list. The letters have a docket written by James Watt, with the name of the correspondent and the date, but only two have a summary. Any summary in square brackets has been provided by the cataloguer. |
