| Description | Bundle of fourteen letters to James Watt, ten from Doctor Joseph Prietley, two from Lawrence Crell, two draft replies. 1788 — 1792. There is a bundle label, written in red ink, as follows: ' Letters from Dr Priestley and Mr L. Crell to Mr Watt. 1789 - 1790. No. 1 to 13.' The letters are numbered in red ink. The letter numbered 1 (old no.) has '1789 to 1792' written on it in pencil. Two letters, old nos. 4 and unnumbered draft (08 July 1791), were removed for the Bicentenary of the Lunar Society exhibition in 1966, were numbered JWP C1/18 and C1/20 when the papers were purchased in 1995, and have now been replaced in this bundle. The letters were arranged in approximately chronological order with the most recent letter first. The letters have been a docket by James Watt with the name of the correspondent and the date, and some have a very brief summary. Any summary in square brackets has been provided by the cataloguer. |
