| Description | A bundle of eight letters and papers to James Watt from Dr. William Small. . There is a bundle wrapper, numbered 1 in red ink, on which is written in black ink: ‘ Dr Small’s Letter, 5 Feb[ruar]y 1769, concerning the Specification of Mr Watt's Invention.’ : and in another hand, 'other papers relative to his specification annexed '. In red ink has been written, ‘ No. 1 to 7 ’. There are six papers numbered in red ink in addition to the bundle wrapper, and 2 further papers with no number, one of which is the letter from Small described above. The numbers have not been changed during cataloguing. Few of the papers have a note of correspondent or a summary. Any summary in square brackets has been given by the cataloguer. The letter mentioned above has been fully transcribed for the ‘Extracts from Correspondence’ in James P. Muirhead's three volume work The Mechanical Inventions of James Watt, (London, 1854). It forms letter 42 in this work. The drafts for the specifications are all versions of the same composition.
