| Description | On the outer cover is the following in James Watt's hand: ' James Watt. Glasgow. 1773 May [to] 1774 March.' The following has been written on the front cover by James Watt jr.: ' Monkland Canal Settlement of Account with Dr. Roebuck who agreed to transfer his Share of the Steam Engine to Mr Boulton. Camp[b]eltown Canal & Harbour. Experiments on Steam. Survey of River Forth etc. D[itt]o of Caledonian Canal. Death of Mrs. Watt.' On the frontispiece is: ' Journal Book. James Watt. Glasgow. May 1773.' [The journal actually begins on 25 April 1773. Three sheets of paper with various calculations have been attached to a loose folded page at the back of the volume. Margaret Watt's death was reported (p.76) to Watt in Dumbarton, on 29 Sep. 1773, by Mr Hamilton. Watt had been surveying at Fort Augustus when the news of her illness reached him, and had hastened south. The journal includes tables of measurements.] |
