The following has been written on the front cover by James Watt jr.:
' March 10 to 28 May 1774.
Greenock Cistern.
Gilmerton Coal.
Rutherglen Bridge.
Journey to Birmingham
Mem[orandu]ms Glasgow 5th [this should be 10th] Octr. 1775.'
On the frontispiece is: ' Journal Book. James Watt. Calton of Glasgow. March 20th 1774.'
[The majority of the volume is unused. In the inner pocket formed by the front of the leather cover and the card cover of the notebook is a folded paper with the docket ' Accounts of the Inverness Survey. 1774 '. In the inner pocket formed by the back of the leather cover and the card cover of the notebook is a folded paper with a lock of brown hair. Watt has written on the back inner paper:
' In the pocket of this book is some of my late wife M.M's hair.']
