| Description | There was no original bundle label, but the letters had been numbered 1 to 100 in red ink, in ? the 19th century. The letters had been divided into two bundles which were numbered in 1993, JWP W/10, which contained (old) nos. 1 to 76; and JWP W/12, which contained (old) nos 77 to 100. There is a wrapper for JWP W/12 on which James Watt jr. has written : ‘Letters from [tear] Pentland etc. relative to Mr. Arago. Not necessary to be taken with me to Paris. London. 13 Mar. 1837’.
The letters in W/10 were arranged in chronological order beginning with the most recent; those in W/12 in chronological order beginning with the earliest. The division of the bundles has been retained. and the letters in W/10 have now been re-arranged into chronological order, beginning with the earliest, and re-numbered. A conspectus of old and new numbers can be found at the end of the list.
Letter (old) no.25 had at some point become separated and in 1993 was numbered JWP G/19. Letter (old) no.64 had at some point become separated and in 1993 was numbered JWP 4/83. These have now been returned to the sequence. The letters with (old) numbers 57 and 60 have not been located. All letters have a summary provided by James Watt jr. which is given below in italics up to no. 20. |
