| Description | These letters between Francis Jeffrey and Gregory Watt mainly concern articles by Gregory written for the Edinburgh Review, of which Jeffrey was editor.This is a packet containing 40 letters and papers. There is an original cover, with a label which reads: ‘Letters as to Gregory Watt. Arranged in order by J.P.M. [James Patrick Muirhead] November, 1860. Re-examined, July 1875’. The bundle was described in the Inventory made for Chancery, dated 1870. It was listed as in Tin Box 6, and included four letters from various people to James Watt jr.; a passport ; 33 letters between Gregory and Francis Jeffrey, arranged in chronological order; and a copy of Gregory's paper read to the Royal Society, 'Observations on Basalt etc. with some Geological Remarks'. (1804). In 1993, when collected from Doldowlod, these were all found in bundle JWP 6/5, except the passport, which was JWP C2/26. The bundle as described in 1870 has now been re-assembled, except for the passport, which is listed at MS 3219/7/42. Many of the letters have areas of text marked out in pencil.This may heve been done by J.P. Muirhead, when planning the memoir of Gregory Watt which he composed. The letters were not numbered. A docket had been added to some of the letters , with the name of the correspondent and the date. There are no summaries. |
