Lichfield
Sir,
Mr. Sanders has handed to me your Letter of the 14th: Instt. respecting a Property tax Assessment on a farm held in 1842 by Thos. Allen under the late Mr. Boulton.
Allen being dead, Mr. Sanders wishes me to state, as a Servant of Mr Boulton & the Executors any facts from which we conclude the assessment on this Farm has been put too high.
In July 1843 I paid John T. Flynn, the Collector under Rd: Beilby, 118 Nelson Stt: West Birmingham Assessor for the Hundred of Hemlingford £16. 2. 0 for the year ending 5 April 1843. The assessment for 1844 became £20. 1. 10; & (as no papers had been served) I paid on Account £10. & the Collector afterwards on the 23d. March 1844 brot. a large book in which were detailed the properties & sums to be paid, & that against Allen's farm, I afterwards found would represent somewhere about £280.. whereas the Rent produced by the whole Farm was £191. 11. only.
Then Mr. Sanders assesses another part of the Farm which lies in the Handsworth District so that as far as my recollection serves, the whole excess of the assessed above the real value of the farm was about £130.
At this moment I cannot put my hand on Flynn's paper, but presume easy referrence may be had to Mr. Beilby's assessment and Mr. Sanders will give you his own. I am
Sir
Your Obdt Servt.
C: J: Chubb
