DescriptionThe documents in this series were listed in Matthew Boulton's 'Catalogue of Papers MB's Counting Room 1760-1790' (MS 3782/13/157), as 'Salt & Startin marriage negotiations', and were contained, according to the entry, in Box B. The Salts and the Startins were both prominent Birmingham banking families, friends of the Boultons. Charles Startin and Eliza Salt wished to marry, a union evidently strongly disapproved of by the Salt family. Matthew Boulton and Samuel Garbett seem to have been consulted in negotiations for a marriage settlement which would protect part of Miss Salt's fortune for her own or her family's future use in the event of her death without issue or Charles Startin predeceasing her.

There is further correspondence relating to this marriage elsewhere in the papers of Matthew Boulton and Family, see:

MS 3782/12/33/178, 197, 199
MS 3782/12/34/3, 4, 5, 11, 16, 17, 22, 27, 253
MS 3782/12/37/79

For the post nuptial marriage settlement of Charles Startin and Elizabeth Salt, see MS 1758.
