DescriptionDear Sir,
The Caveat entered in my name was to prevent any other persons obtaining a Patent for making Clocks or other time pieces, which should shew Hours, Minutes Seconds, or other Spaces of Time, without the use of Pinions or of endless Screws, & which should strike & repeat, or do either, although they have no other wheel or wheels, than the one or more employed in the going part.
You see that I meant both clocks & watches. In the watches the striking & repeating is produced by a spring pressing upon or being in the Piece with the teeth, wch raise the Hammer. In the clocks by the weight of the Piece itself, or of a weight acting upon it.

Your billet wch ye post brought me this morning distressed me more than I can express, for by some mistake or neglect, the second letter of Mr Matthews was not delivered beore 10 or 11 o clock in the forenoon. That has yeilded vast consolation, for besides the misfortune to you my friend, it grieved me cruelly to suppose that a Fordyce had turned Scoundrel, altho' that family & I have ceased to be acquainted.
We mistook about the Navigation. The single share is worth 195, & the ten others 650, in all 845 or 900, at 70 premium. But should that be wanted how long notice must be given to G.
Friday 6 o clock evening.
Will you ask Dr Franklin to repose himself chez nous for some time.
[Address-label:] To / Matthew Boulton Esqre.
