Description(Press-copy. Docketed "May 13, 14, 15.")
Dear Matt,
The reception of your letter dated Tuesday gave Mr. Watt and my self much pleasure, both on account of your health, as well as of the state of your proceedings.
As Bateman has erected several other engines, it may not be amiss to enquire if they are in motion, and how far they are affected by the example of their erector.
Nothing material hath occur’d here since your departure, nor have I any news to mention.
I presume you have seen Mr. Thackery’s letter or note to Mr. Jones, which appears to contain some untruths, and I doubt not but you will, with assistants, be able to furnish a compleat answer to it.
Thackery says he repeatedly apply’d to Mr. Ewart, which does not accord with his affidavit or, I am perswaded, with truth; and I doubt not but we shall be able to stamp other marks of dishonor, besides that of pyrate, upon his character.
One Mr. James Mort, No. 8 Tib Street, Manchester, has inform’d us that he is erecting one of the pyrate’s engines but is willing to pay our premium. He has been answer’d by Southern and refer’d to you. If he is not gone too far with his engine, it would be more to his advantage to throw away one of the cylinders and make the other into a double engine; but follow your own discression; it’s not a great object. However, I think we should give no licences for any persons to make our engines, as we can make all that will be wanted.
I am, dear Matt, your very affectionate father,
Mattw. Boulton
