| Description | (Directed to 1 New Bond Street.) Sir, Since mine of yesterday I have the mortification to acquaint you of an accident by fire which broke out yesterday evening about 6 o'clock. The engine had been pumping water from 5 o'clock in the morning and was then at work. The engine man first discovered some planks on fire that had been placed over the boiler for the purpose of seasoning; he attempted to quench them, but in vain, and whilest going for assistance the flames communicated to the floor above, and from thence to the roof, and that to the adjoining, round the high chimney. The whole damage I conceive may be about £50. Of a bad job, it was lucky it happened at the time it did, as there were plenty of hands in less than a quarter of an hour after the bell was rung. Some few people were hurt by slates, &c., but not very badly. As I shall write again by box I shall acquaint you more particulars, if any occur, also about Mr. Küchler, &c., &c. In the mean time, I am, sir, your obliged humble servant, Wm. D. Brown Soho, July 21, 1800. [Edited transcript.] |
