Description(Dated Friday, 3 o’clock. Directed to 6 Green Lettice Lane.)

Sir,
Martin has this moment left me. He says he has given my brother an undertaking; I have not yet seen him, therefore cannot speak to any particulars. Martin has been at Mr. Matthews's to see you. He says he has now satisfy'd your demand, but there is an anxiety to know from whence your motives for this cruelty has arose-which you as a man, he is sure, will not refuse to give him. A great deal more I have been forced to hear, which all ended in my promising to get him an interview if I can, and that I must send to him this evening or tomorrow morning. I hope you will be out of the way, but at any rate, as I have hitherto pleaded ignorance, and all has rested with Mr. Hodges and you, it wou'd be improper to inform him now to the contrary, or perhaps to give him any information at all. The propriety of this rests with you; but he is too artful not to catch at anything in that explanation which may be actionable, or which may form a ground for delaying fulfilling his engagements.
I shall be at home all this evening, and, in all probability, tomorrow morning. I am, Sir,
Your very humble servant,
R. Chippindall
It is necessary to observe that M. was told at Mr. Matthews's that you wou'd be found there tomorrow morning before 11 o'clock.
PS. Since writing the above, my brother writes me that Martin has got his attorney, Mr. Barnett of Henrietta Street, to undertake to pay his debt and costs on the 1st day of term (24th), or put in a sufficient bail. He has again taken out the names, as inclosed, as pattentees of steam engines, &c.
