I am apply'd to by Mr. Gray for a medal-on one side the head of the King, and on the reverse either something emblematic of his late preservation, or merely an appropriate motto. He is doing something at present here for the ladies. He has got some of the old restoration medals (which he has, in silver, by him) gilt, and has them elegantly sett and enamel'd borders, on the reverse a motto:
À Deo Coronuto,
À Deo Custodito,
Vitam Longam
Annos Multos.
These are merely for want of something more compleat and better adapted to the occasion.
He wishes to know if you have any of these medals in gold by you, as he must have something either gold or to appear as gold. If you have not time to sink dyes for a reverse for this medal, or may not think it likely to defray the expence, he wishes for a few of the restoration medals to be well gilt on the dexter (or head) side, but as the other side will be cover'd or set it need not be gilt.
Now, as these things are nothing unless executed as soon as possible after thought of, you will have the goodness to desire Mr. Brown to inform me on the receipt of this what you think can be produced, and how soon (provided you think them worth setting about), for I have promis'd to wait on Gray and Readale & Co. on Saturday, the one to inform the princeps, the other the Queen, Prince of Wales, &c., and your answer will be anxiously waited for on that day.
The crowd at Court today was never equal'd, and as there will be something emblematic in every dress at all the assemblies for some time, or at least until and on the birth day, much demand I shou'd hope wou'd be for medals on the occasion.
