Date4 February 1772
Description(Directed to 14 Cannon Street. Includes a memorandum in German.)
[I hope the Admiralty have paid [? Otaheite Medals] and that you will also obtain our demand from Paterson for the Free Mason Candlesticks. The enclosed is an account of a noted Burning Glass which our friend Mr. Jno. Fredk. Steger of Nuremberg has to dispose of; Dr. Small says it is renowned for an exceedingly good one and would venture £100 for it at his own risk: I think it may be obtained for 2/3 of the money demanded, say for £200: however the Doctor thinks it would not be amiss to mention it to his Majesty as it is the most curious piece of it’s kind in Europe. Mr. John Humphreys is dead. Mr. Wright and Miss Hadley are to be married on Monday. Lunn the Cap-maker was married last week to a Lichfield lady of good fortune. I think an order for a Service of Plate would be very acceptable provided we could have old silver to melt.]
