Date25 August 1789
DescriptionDear Friend,
Upon refering to enclosed you will find,
1st. Copy of a letter I wrote to Doctor Percival, Novr. 1787.
2d. A memorandum made by a gentleman whose name I decline at present putting upon paper, and therefore it stands under the denomination of A. Of this memorandum I sent a copy to Doctor Percival and Mr. Robinson last week.
3d. Copy of a letter I wrote to Mr. Robinson of Nottingham the 18th inst., and I wrote nearly the same to Doctor Percival the 17th inst.
4th. Quotations from Mr. Necker's Treatise on Finances, which in hurry I have arranged very carelessly.
5th. Copy of a letter I wrote to Mr. Rose on Sunday.
6th. Copy of a letter I wrote this day to Mr. Stiles, a Commissioner of the Customs.
7th. An enumeration of sundry things which you and I have at times talked of, and most of which I have had a TALK with Mr. Pitt upon, not to say TALKS.
Why I did not before acquaint you with the articles 1st, 2d, and 3d you will probably on consideration see my motive for, which I don't doubt you will approve. The articles 5th and 6th are in consequence of your letter to me on Sunday. The articles 4th and 7th I now send, as you may possibly incline to make them subjects of conversation.
I flatter myself you may think of returning to Birmingham much sooner than you intended, as neither Mr. Motteux or your friend Garbett are with you, and that you may think of going with them to Buxton the latter end of next month and thereby obtain two respites instead of one, and not be so long as three weeks at a time from home.
Mrs. Sarah Turner joins me in wishing you and Miss Boulton may be much pleased with your excursion. Pray do me the favour to present my respects to Messrs. Barrow and assure them I don't forget the attention they obliged me with when I was there some years since.
I am ever gratefully and faithfully yours,
Saml. Garbett
