Description(Annexed is an account of sales, 26 Sep.-16 Oct.)
Sir,
I have delay'd writing till now, not having any thing particular to relate. Annex'd is a transcript of Soho sales since my last to you of 26th September.
I have the pleasure to inform you that the reels, &c., are now nearly finish'd, and it is expected they will all be sent off by Thursday. Great expedition has been used with this order-indeed the parties concern'd have been very expeditious; Mr. Scale has constantly attended them. Soho is now in want of orders in general, and it is hoped some considerable ones will soon come in.
You will please to observe we have lately sent Mr. Wise of Bristol goods amounting to £96. 5. 2, chiefly consisting of silver sugar basons; these, with what goods were before sent, makes the amount £125. 3. 8. As Mr. Fothergill knows but little of his stability, &c., he wishes you would be so kind to enquire concerning him on your return.
At present not much company visits Soho. I have examin'd the Toy Room books and find that nearly the same amount of goods has been sold for ready money as was to this time last year, (i.e.) about £420. Mrs. Boulton inform'd me that, on Sunday morn last, Lord Dudley and some other person call'd at your house in hopes of seeing you.
Mr. Tennant of Little Aston was here to day about one o'clock in company with some ladies and a colonel, which latter gentleman had a letter (as Mr. Tennant inform'd me) strongly recommending him to your attention, &c.; they seem'd much disappointed at your absence. I shew'd them the one wheel'd clocks, crossing machines, &c.; the clocks they particularly wanted to see.
I am very glad to hear your engine business goes on well, and permit me to add my best wishes for the general success of all your concerns. I am most respectfully, sir, your much obliged and most obedient humble servant,
Jno. Hodges
