Date9 April 1788
Description(The above date is the date of the postmark.)
Dear Sir,
Mr. Matthews has forgot to mention that he yesterday saw a gentleman and made some enquiries respecting Mr. J., and he is advised by that gentleman not to make any application to said Mr. J., who has no security to offer that it wou’d be proper for you to accept, and therefore it wou’d be better to let the business sleep.
There is no box come from Paris; you may depend, shou’d any come here, it shall immediately be forwarded to you.
I hope your cheeks are burning hot, for Mr. J. L. Baumgartner and I have been backbiting you with a vengeance.
Give my love to Miss Boulton, &c.
This letter is to be addresssed to Mr. Walker and I never write love letters to be perused by a third person, so I shall only say that I am ever yours affectionately,
C. Matthews
[Noted at the foot by Zaccheus Walker:]
Mr. Boulton will be pleased to do the necessary with the inclosed; the sooner it is returned, the sooner the money will be received. Z.W.
