| Description | [You sent me in October 1768, a Bill of £55-8-9 on a Mr. Joshua Hibbens, then of Walnut Tree Walk, Lambeth, which Bill, after repeated applications was returned unpaid. A man of the same name has been at Paris, and took from London a credit of £5000 on my friend Panchaud. The credit was given by a lawyer, who has frequently given large credits on Panchaud, and were always regularly complied with. The reason assigned for the large credit was that Hibbens was to make large purchases in different parts of France. Upon his taking up £700, instead of purchasing goods he paid this money into another banker’s hands for Bills on London. Panchaud sent me an express to stop payment of these Bills into London. That is done. i have my doubts of the solidity of the lawyer, and it appears to be a swindling business. I wish to know who and what Hibbens is and how you became connected with him. Your friend [Samuel] Garbett will have told you I attended his Meeting: he seems to behave exceedingly well towards his creditors.] |
