Soho 21st Sepr 1780
Dear Sir-
Your esteem'd favor of the 16th Currt I received this morning and agreeable to your request I will do all in my power respecting the Silk machines but I fear it is too late to be of that use that I might have been had I engaged sooner; the work is in a great measure now cast, & the workmen all at work at the old prices but I am in hopes that something may yet be sav'd. I offerd my services at the very first both with respect to my own assistance and many of the hands in the Button Business who had little to do especialy E. Creeds Shop, but through some misunderstandings (which are not worth relating) all was rejected however all is now clear'd up & I shall enter into the spirit of it as much as possible, for we have almost nothing to do in the Button trade.
Mr. Rehe came on tuesday last and his man Moterham on Saturday; so far as I can judge at present every thing wears the appearance of being done in the time Limited and the complaints Mr. Matthews made are remedied, at least all that Mr Rehe knows of, but he will see what Mr. Matthews says this afternoon, Mr. Bingley has the entire management of the Arbors and goes on very well-Mr. Keir was consulted at the first going off but I have never seen him since-his Man Edwd. says he is to leave Soho & go to Tipton in a month or 6 weeks for good-Mr K has been building an Oven or annealing place by Allens Brick kiln to anneal his bolts, but how it answers I know not. The sewing on room will be taken this time to Lacker & put the Reels to gither in; it being a much more convenient place than Creeds Shop. Since I wrote you last I have been at Yoxhall every thing seems in tolerable good train. Kinkley has got the Draft to engross the lease for Wooley, but at the proper date & 3 Guineas per [annum]. Mr Whitehurst in a Letter to you dated 25 A[ugust sa]ys-"Shall you have occasion for the two Silver second "watches which you orderd in the year 1779? or have you supplyd yourself elsewhere? If not I "have two in readiness of that kind. Have you furnished yourself with a good seconds Watch of "the best kind? if not I can let you have one in one month from the date hereof provide you are "under no engagement. The gun came safe & tho' much approvd no orders have yet been "given."
Mrs. Boulton spent the day yesterday with Mrs. Baskerville and in playing at Blindmans buff upon the Green after Dinner she had the misfortune to fall and Strain her ancle; but she hopes to be well enough to go to the Oratoria of the Messiah tomorrow she intended going to day but durst not venture. I hear Mr. & Mrs. Keir are going next week to spend some days at Matlock & Buxton &c. I beleive the Copying Machine folks are not Much disturbd any way. I have nothing to Add but my best wishes for your health & prospirity & being
yours Sincerely
