| Description | London Jany 24 1774 Dear Sir The inclosed I received by last nights coach and sent it to you to answer it yourself in a letter to Mr Gilbt: Hamilton mercht Glasgow-I have often seen the Gentleman he speaks of and although I am not personally acquainted with him I have always heard him spoken of as one of the first Clerks in Glasgow and you see his business has been mostly, the principal Clerk to Banking Companys, I therefore consider such a person as a very valuable aquisition to your works, and think you need not hesitate to give him such terms as may make him yours-As I do not write to Mr Hamilton you will be so good as to answer the whole letter. A parcel of Grains & pennywts. came last night-the Grains are Objected to for being rough upon the edges & for having figures upon them instead of dots, the latter being more approved of-Mr Whitehurst has to day returned again to his old plan of adjusting for the trade how long that may last or whether the Lords of the Treasury will permit it I know not I say no more about him; but I think that before this time you ought to have sent up more weights, those here are mostly all done and shall be sent to morrow- If I had plenty of good weights I could sell them at good prices but I have no assortment and cannot sell at all- I begin to fear that If you do not make an exertion & send Assortments & a person here to take care of them in the Office that it will turn out a losing concern- My Compts: to Dr Small-I have seen ShortsTelescope but have not looked through it as the day did not permit it it is a Gregorian telescope with a smaller one of the same kind for an eye piece he thinks nothing of amagnifying power of 44 thousand times and says they are sufficiently distinct & light when used Celestialy-he says that the Atmossphere is not magnified except by the first telescope, this I do not comprehend I am just now with Mr Small & Mr More are just now with me-& have compts to you Mr More complains that the shells come off the platina buttons he had from you, from exceeding bad turning down Your's Watt
