Birmingham May Dear Sir I received yours of Saturday this morning only-I do not see that the Iron Cramps would be of any use what I would reccommend is as follows [Here there is a diagram, to which the following words refer] a,a,a,a, are Rivets about 3/4 inch diar to be riveted with the points Red hot which if well done will pull it Closer than screws, they may be Placed from 4 to 6 inches asunder and there must be one beyond the end of the Crack on each side-If the Rivets should be too difficult in execution screws tapped into the Ring b.b. may do-In putting the Cylinder Bottom joint together Care must be taken to fill the joint with pasteboard &c quite to the outside all of one thickness if this has not been done before I should imagine the crack to be as much owing to that as to any thing else-at least J. Dudley crackt the upper end of Wheal Union air pump by that method It was cured by a Copper Jacket and a screw hoop round the Barrel but we had no opportunity of a flanch near the upper one to screw it to or I should have preferred something like what I now recomend as to the Crack itself you will easily make it tight by some sort of plaister, provided the joint be supported quite to the outside-Somehow my hand shakes so much that it is grievance for me to write just now So having no news, I beg leave to return you the advice you gave of bearing a good heart and ever remain Dear Sir Yours affectionately James Watt [Address-label:] Mr Boulton / at Mr Wm.
