I am sorry to write any thing that I think will be disagreeable to you but necessity hath no Law
Mr M: Mr Ws. & my self went yesterday to Mr W Lawyer who made many objections & raisd many difficulties. He sd. Mr Fenton had not signd for ye Co. because he had only signd his own name & not ye firm of ye Co. He also insisted upon haveing an Attested Copy of the article of partnership of Chasewater & Co & other things which were = impracticable. But I must do Mr. Wiss the Justice to say that he raisd no difficulties himself & seemd very anxious to obviate those raisd by his Lawyer & in every respect behaved with a friendly propriety. Mr W: then asked if there were no other Engines that we could assign instead of Chasewater & that it would be much more agreeable to him to have several small Engines than only one large one upon a precarious Copper Mine I then mentiond the following viz Scotts 2—Chapmans, Westons, Reynolds, G Masons Wrights of Hull Shadwell & Chelsea with their probable amounts wch. seemd perfectly agreeable to Mr Wiss & to wch. his Lawyer aquiessd but I concluded nothing untill I had recvd your opineon wch. I must beg youl fav me with. Now the following are my Wishes & my Plan.—Mr Wiss hath recvd ye 4000£ of E I Co. (one of wch. is Rehes) & this he keeps till the affair is settled some way. I propose to pay L V W ye 3000 & get their release for 7000 but I am not without hopes that I shall prevail upon them to give up your security entirely & take B & F for the remaining 7000. Mr Matthews knows them well & flatters me they will do it.—I would then propose for you either to take of B F one third of ye 7000 or for me to assign over to you any particular Engines = to such third in value
By this means You become disburthend from all your Engagements & I in a more agreeable situation. I wish to recv your opineon
