| Description | This file contains correspondence between Matthew Boulton and his London agent, John Woodward (see the Guide to Persons and Firms). The contents were formerly in a portfolio entitled: John Woodward 1793 to 1803 M B This is the title recorded in the Inventory compiled by the Assay Office, but unfortunately the portfolio was subsequently discarded. Under M. R. Boulton’s arrangement the file was placed in Box I. i. The contents are arranged in one chronological sequence, except that at the end is listed some correspondence of 1803 between Woodward and William D. Brown which does not appear to belong here, having probably been transferred from elsewhere by the Assay Office. It is possible, too, that some of the other documents were transferred by the Assay Office from other files—in particular 24-31, most of which (unlike the other documents in this file) are docketed by William Cheshire and Zaccheus Walker Jr. and folded in half. The copy letters may originally have been in a separate sequence. Prior to 13 Jul. 1795 Woodward’s letters were written at 6 Green Lettice Lane; thereafter they were written at 13 London Street, with the exception of the letter dated 29 Aug. 1803, which was written at his private residence, 78 Mark Lane. The copy letters are all press-copies. |
