DescriptionThe contents of this file were formerly in a portfolio entitled:

T Mint British

The title and reference are recorded in the contemporary "Index to Correspondence and Documents" and the Inventory of 1841. Unfortunately the portfolio was apparently discarded by the Assay Office. Under M. R. Boulton's arrangement the file was deposited in his Study Safe, and it appears as No. 20 in the 1841 Inventory.

Within the portfolio the documents were divided into three packets, each one contained inside an orange wrapper. The wrappers, which survive, are labelled respectively, "Official Correspondence," "Reports, Estimates, Proposals, and Legal Documents," and "Miscellanies." (The first two also carry additional notes about their contents.) Within the packet of Official Correspondence the Copies were separated from the Letters inside a flimsy wrapper marked simply, "Copies."

The documents are now arranged in four chronological sequences, as follows:

Official Correspondence: Letters. (1-42)
Official Correspondence: Copies. (43-75)
Reports, Estimates, Proposals, and Legal Documents. (75-101)

Miscellanies. (102-104)
It is possible that the last two documents were transferred from elsewhere by the Assay Office.

In the following List "Committee of Coin" is used as an abbreviation for the Right Honourable the Lords of the Committee of Privy Council especially appointed to take into Consideration the State of the Coins of this Kingdom. (Several variations of this title are used in the documents.) Unless stated otherwise, the copy documents are press-copies. The summaries in quotation-marks are taken from the contemporary dockets.
