DescriptionDear Sir, I shou’d have replied to your kind letter on Tuesday if time wou’d have permitted, since when I have been perpetually engaged.
I observe the name of your new concerns, and accord with you in the application of the French proverb, and not less so in the expediency of building all you can this season, being well assured that the sooner you can execute the whole within yourselves the better. You have my warmest wishes for success, and to the extent of my abilities you may command my services and asistance.
I deliver’d the parcel and letter to Mrs. Vere, who no doubt will thank you herself, and I think I can venture to promise that your letters made your peace with her, for they excited much mirth. The offers she made to you when at Soho warrant your presumption of a pardon, and, if obtain’d, I hope you will not, like some of your sex, desert the kind forgiver.
Had I been aware that you alone were forgot in the encomiums, I wou’d not have been so cruel to have refer’d you to the perusal of Mrs. W.’s letter, and I confess myself sorry that your fears of being excommunicated shou’d deprive me of your free opinion of certain persons.
I beg very kind love to your father and sister, and believe me, dear sir, sincerely yours, C. Matthews [Edited transcript.]
