Description"Payment of my income tax. News of the Croydon party."
My dear Sir,
Agreeable to your request received late last night, I have paid four installments on your income tax No. 12, amounting to one hundred and sixty pounds, which I have charged to your private account with me, and have retained the certificates that when the other installments become due I may pay them.
I have just seen the Fothergills in their way to pay your sister a visit, previous to going to C. Lodge to day for winter quarters, the fashionable town time being spring. Mary has been very unwell indeed, but is a little better; Patty very well. I left your mamma at C. Lodge yesterday, but shall deliver your duty.
I congratulate you upon your success against the rogues, and only wish you had got the whole gang. I suppose it will not be long before your sister returns home. I intend, however, to get a peep at her before she goes.
I am, dear sir, sincerely yours,
C. Matthews
Many happy years to you!
