| Description | ‘Mr Butlers method of Planting Fruit Trees is to take out a Trench or Hole the depth of the natural Soil and by no means any deeper then to lay a coat of Marl 4 feet wide, and as long as convenient; the marl to be not less than 4 Inches – Should the natural depth of the soil be more than 2 feet 6 inches, He would not go deeper with his Coat of Marl contending that even good Soil placed below that depth, becomes in a short time crude and unfit for Vegetable purposes. There are many reasons to be adduced against going deeper, the most material of which is it encourages the Root to go lower down than it can find food in a Horrizontal way further than the preparation, and it is not natural for a Root to go upwards. He would rather advise raising the Soil higher than going lower, by raising it round the Trees to the required depth.’ |
