DescriptionSends her notices of my late Father & self for approval and criticis.
[Birmingham author Catherine Hutton, the daughter of William Hutton the historian, was an avid collector of autographed letters which she supplemented by short accounts of the people who had written them. With her letter to M.R. Boulton is a short account of his father’s life, based on one meeting with his father (whom she describes as ‘tall and handsome’) and various published obituaries, as well as a short description of M.R. Boulton drafted to accompany his own letter. The latter reads: ‘Matthew Robinson Boulton Esq, the writer of the following letter, is the only son of the Great Boulton; and to him I owe the letter of his Father, and an exquisite bronze medal, modeled and struck at the Soho manufactory, which is a perfect resemblance of him. The present Mr Boulton has purchased an estate in Oxfordshire, for which he gave £140,000, and he is building, planting, fencing, and improving his domain in every possible way. His principal residence is here; and the superintendance of the Soho manufactory is committed to different persons, who are qualified to preside over its several departments. I have been told that Mr Boulton continues the works only because he is unwilling to throw his numerous horde of workmen out of employ.’]
